Harold Floyd Darnold, 82, of Burlington, died Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at the VA Hospital in Iowa City. Born March 30, 1925, in West Burlington, he was the son of Dewey and Anna Johnson Darnold. In 1962, he married Marian Carter in Burlington. They later divorced. Mr. Darnold was a Burlington Northern Machinist Locomotive inspector for 17 years. He worked at Camp Cleaners for 25 years. He served in the Air Force during World War II and was the last surviving member of the crew that manned the B-17 named Ray's Hell, which carried a horseshoe on every mission. He was a 1943 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. He was an avid billiard player and bowler. He was director and manager of the Iowa Corn Belt Horse Shoe tournament in Crapo Park since 1954. He was an Iowa Hall of Fame and National Hall of Fame Horse Shoe Pitching Association Inductee. He was a runner up in the Iowa State Horse Shoe Championship in 1980 and 1982. In 1982 he placed seventh in the World Horse Shoe Pitching Championship. In 1990 he placed third in the World Horse Shoe Pitching Championship. In 1964 and 1965 he was the straight pool city champion. Survivors include one son, Jerry Darnold of Burlington; one granddaughter, Haley Darnold of Burlington; one brother, James Darnold of West Burlington; two sisters, Betty Atkinson of Burlington, and Donna Wise of Big Rock, Ill.; 10 nieces, seven nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Darnold. The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel on Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Darnold will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Prugh's Chapel with the Rev. Marshall Jackman officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A memorial has been established in his name.
