Obituary
Helen Jean Humphrey, 92, of Burlington, died at Blair House Nursing & Rehab in Burlington, Iowa, on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at 3:44 p.m. Born on July 10, 1917, in Holdrege, Nebraska, she was the daughter of James R. and Helen Wills Cooper. She married John Mahaney Humphrey on January 21, 1945, in Burlington, Iowa. He died on March 26, 2005. Jean was a graduate of Grinnell College, and did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin and Iowa Wesleyan College. She was a librarian for the Burlington Public Library and the Mediapolis High School Library. She was also employed by National Research of Burlington. She was a member of the Episcopal Church Women and St. Agnes Guild of the Church. She was a quilter, and enjoyed making stuffed animals and dolls. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She is survived by two nieces, Jean (James) Neumann of Iowa City, Iowa, and Lindsay (Clifford) Calhoun of Burlington, Iowa; sister-in-law Betty Cooper of Burlington, Iowa, one cousin, James Steinman of Tucson, Arizona; several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one brother, William "Bill" Cooper; and stepfather, William Sean Cooper (who adopted Jean). Funeral services for Helen Humphrey will be held on Monday, February 22, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Burlington, Iowa. Fr. John Horn will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa. The family will receive friends at Christ Episcopal Church on Monday morning from 9:00 until 10:30 a.m. Memorials have been established for Christ Episcopal Church and Burlington Public Library.
