John Mahaney Humphrey, 87, of Burlington, died at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Burlington Care Center. Born November 11, 1917, in Burlington, he was the son of Raymond and Selma Wicke Humphrey. On January 21, 1945, he married Helen Jean Cooper in Burlington. Mr. Humphrey was a safety engineer for GTE Sylvania for 16 years, assistant production manager for Mason & Hanger Co. at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, and earlier worked for Sheaffer Pen Co. He was a 1937 graduate of Burlington High School, and a 1938 graduate of Burlington Junior College. He received a Bachelor of Science and Commerce Degree from the University of Iowa in 1939. He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran, serving from 1942 to 1946 as a statistical control officer with the Third Fighter Command, where he attained the rank of Captain. Survivors include his wife; two nephews, Reed Humphrey of Greenville, S. C., and Bruce Humphrey of Milwaukee; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Humphrey. No formal visitation
