Mrs. Ruby Lillian Crowder, 98, of Burlington, died at 12:03 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2012, at Great River Medical Center - Klein Unit. Born April 16, 1914 in rural Sperry, IA, she was the daughter of Harvey and Mabel E. (Ping) Hannum. On October 31, 1936 she married George John Crowder in Muscatine. He preceded her in death on July 20, 1991. To their union a son Donald was born. Donald passed away April 10, 1993. Mrs. Crowder received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Iowa Wesleyan College. She was a school teacher teaching at the rural schools of Tama, Piney Wood, Kingston and Brush College. She moved to Burlington in 1932 and taught fifth grade for five years, math for 12 years, she taught 12 years at the Apollo Middle School and North Hill for 17 years in the Burlington School System. Mrs. Crowder was a member of First United Methodist Church, Moose and Eagles Auxiliaries, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, National Association of Retired Teachers and Nation Association of Retired School Personnel. Survivors include one step daughter, Lois (Richard) Carty of Gardnerville, NV; daughter-in-law, Gale Crowder of Midlothian, VA; two grandchildren, Lara Lee Crowder (Reagan Romali) and Lindy Lee Vest; two step-grandchildren, Jeffrey Carty and Lisa Carty Schmidt; three great-grandsons, Taylor, Will and Ian; two step great-grandsons, Stephen and Daniel Carty; one sister, Dorothy Amyx of Summerland, CA and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Donald, parents, four brothers and two sisters. The graveside memorial funeral service for Mrs. Crowder will be held at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for First United Methodist Church. According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded.
