Bernice Mae Gorman Cronk, 96, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Blair House, Burlington, Iowa, on Tuesday afternoon, January 14, 2014.
Born on November 18, 1917 in Fairfield, Iowa, she was the daughter of Russell Arch and Irene Teeter Gorman. She married Edmund F. “Bud” Cronk on February 6, 1940 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on July 23, 1997.
Bernice was a registered nurse and worked at Burlington Medical Center and the Klein Unit for 40 years. During that time she was named Employee of the Year one year.
She enjoyed life to the fullest and being with her family and friends. She enjoyed walking, riding her bike and being outside. She volunteered at numerous places including helping at various nursing homes and helping with patient meals and activities. She volunteered in the surgical waiting room at the hospital. She was active in many areas at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member for over 70 years, helping with Sunday school, youth group, women’s group, just to name a few. She loved people and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the Jane Delano Club, Shining Star, and Kings Daughters.
She is survived by one daughter, Norma Poland of Quincy, Illinois; three grandsons, David (Denise) Poland of Quincy, IL, Michael (Lisa) Poland of Minnetonka, MN, and Gregory (Kimberly) Poland of Joshua Tree, CA; three great-grandsons, Benjamin Poland of Quincy, IL, Matthew Poland of Fort Collins, CO, and Dylan Thomas of Minnetonka, MN; one great-granddaughter, Alex Thomas of Minnetonka, MN; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, “Bud”; sister, Ferne Rollins; brother, Leonard Gorman; son-in-law, Charles Poland.
Funeral services for Bernice Mae Gorman Cronk will be held on Saturday, January 18th, 2014 at Prugh’s Funeral Chapel, Burlington, Iowa, at 10:00 am. Rev. Deb Kinney will officiate. A luncheon at First Presbyterian Church will immediately follow the funeral service. Interment will then follow the luncheon at Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 9:00 am to 10:00 am in Prugh’s Chapel. Friends may call from 8:00 a.m. Thursday morning until the time of service. A memorial has been established at First Presbyterian Church Youth Program.
