William Thomas Cooper, 82, of Fort Madison Health Center and formerly of West Burlington died at 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2006, at Fort Madison Community Hospital. Born March 2, 1923 in Kansas City, Missouri, he was the son of Dick Joseph and Mary Callahan Cooper. In June of 1953 he married Betty Kathryn Cole in Falls City, Nebraska. Mr. Cooper was a graduate of Falls City (Nebraska) High School and Nebraska Wesleyan College; he received his masters degree at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville. He was a Navy veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was the marching band instructor at Burlington High School and Oak Street Middle School for 42 years. He was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church, Lions Club, Oriental Lodge No. 61 AF&AM of Knoxville and Men's Bridge Club. He enjoyed golfing, music, bridge and woodcarving. Survivors include his wife, Betty Cooper of West Burlington; one daughter, Kathryn Cooper of Des Moines; one son, Charles Thomas (Laura) Cooper of Dexter, Missouri; and one sister, Martha Jo Spellman of Milford, Nebraska. His parents preceded him in death. A memorial has been established for West Burlington Lions Club.
