Obituary
Betty Edgar Cooper, 100, died at her home on Friday, July 19, 2013.
She was born May 28, 1913 in Burlington, Iowa, to George Pomeroy Edgar and Elizabeth Robertson Edgar. Gently reared, she was educated in the private academy of Miss McKitterick. She remained an avid reader throughout her life. She married William James Cooper on September 23, 1934.
Betty was a lifetime member of Christ Episcopal Church and the Burlington Golf Club. She belonged to the Burlington Fine Arts League and the Altar Guild at Christ Episcopal Church. She volunteered for the Red Cross and Klein’s Hospital among other organizations. In recent years she enjoyed Thursday lunches with friends at Digger’s Rest.
Living on the bluffs of the Mississippi for nearly all her life, she loved the river. Her grandchildren fondly remember her piloting the boat as Grandfather Bill taught them to ski. Five generations of family and friends have watched barges and eagles and whitecaps from her sunporch windows.
She is survived by two daughters, Lindsay Calhoun of Burlington and Jean (James) Neumann of Iowa City, Iowa; four grandchildren, William (Jill Carlson) Calhoun, Catherine (Ronald) Bosch, Mary Elizabeth Neumann and Helen Kate (Scott Samuelson) Neumann; and seven great grandchildren, Emily and Samuel Calhoun, Henry, Cooper and Mary Bosch, and Irene Rose and William James Samuelson.
She is preceded in death by her husband, her brother Lindsay Robertson Edgar, her son in law, Clifford Calhoun, and her lifelong friend Jane Fear Chapman.
Funeral services for Betty Cooper will be held at the Christ Episcopal Church on Friday, July 26 at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Wayne Kamm will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. No formal visitation is planned. Memorials have been established for Christ Episcopal Church and the Southeast Iowa Symphony.
