Clifford Julian Calhoun, 76, of Burlington, Iowa, died at GRMC Klein Center, on Tuesday morning, June 25, 2013.
Born on August 7, 1936 in Fairfield, Iowa, he was the son of John Nelson and Dorthea Clemence Rains Calhoun. He married Lindsay Cooper on June 21, 1958 at Christ Episcopal Church, Burlington, Iowa.
Clifford graduated from Burlington High School in 1954 and Harvard University in 1958 He served as an officer in the army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina from 1958 to 1960. Following his service to our country, Clifford attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 1963. As an attorney, he practiced law for 5 years at the Jones, Day, Cockley & Reavis Law Firm in Cleveland, Ohio. He was Professor of Law at the University of Colorado for 29 years, also serving as the associate dean and acting dean. In 1998 the Clifford Calhoun Service Award was established and is presented to a faculty or staff member who contributes to the public service of the law school “in the spirit and tradition of the contributions Professor Calhoun made in his career at the law school.”
Clifford was a member of the Ohio and Colorado Bar Associations. He was president of the local board and member of the governing board of the Southeast Iowa Symphony. He was also a long time member of the Burlington Kiwanis Club and SCORE. He enjoyed music, was an avid reader and a dog lover. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lindsay; one son, William (Jill) Calhoun of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania; one daughter, Catherine (Ronald) Bosch of Boston, Massachusetts; five grandchildren, Henry, Cooper & Mary Bosch and Emily & Samuel Calhoun; one brother, John R. (Betty) Calhoun of Long Beach, California; one sister, Carol A. Calhoun of New York, New York; one sister-in-law, Jean (James) Neumann of Iowa City, Iowa; mother-in-law, Betty Cooper of Burlington, Iowa; several nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his devoted dog, Cairie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services for Clifford Julian Calhoun will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Burlington, Iowa. The Rev. Wayne Kamm and Rev. George Rogerson will officiate. Following the service, cremation will be accorded. Interment of ashes will be Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at Prugh’s Chapel on Monday, July 8, 2013 after 8:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at Christ Episcopal Church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Memorials have been established for Christ Episcopal Church and the Humane Society.
