Blythe Charles Conn, 99, of Des Moines, formerly of Burlington, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007, at Wesley Acres in Des Moines. Born May 19, 1908, in Burlington, he was the son of John Thomas and Mary Louise Sleeter Conn. On April 2, 1935, he married Gladys Viola Trailer in Burlington. She preceded him in death. Mr. Conn began his career in a private law practice. He served as the Des Moines County attorney, a Burlington Municipal Court judge and president for the Burlington School Board. He was elected to the Iowa House of Representative from 1955 to 1957. In 1960, he was honored as Burlington's No. 1 Citizen. In 1962, he moved to Des Moines to become the executive secretary of the Iowa Association of School Boards until his retirement. He graduated from Burlington High School and earned his bachelors and law degrees from the University of Iowa. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi social fraternity and Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. Survivors include one daughter, Meredith Watters of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one son. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Wesley Acres Community Room. An additional memorial service for Mr. Conn will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Meeting House in Burlington. Burial will follow at Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Unitarian Meeting House.
