Mr. Lyle B. Collins, 92, of Burlington, died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at Blair House.
Born October 5, 1921 in Mt. Union, he was the son of Frank L. and Hazel V. Obermann Collins. On October 6, 1946 he married Katherine Richardson in Burlington. She preceded him in death on June 26, 2013.
Mr. Collins was a 1940 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a Navy veteran of World War II serving on merchant vessels as an armed guard. He worked at Chanen's Auto Supply for 30 years and for Sieg Auto Parts for nine years.
Mr. Collins was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He was a stamp collector, Cubs and Hawkeye fan, and enjoyed woodworking, making clocks and fishing.
Survivors include two sons, Craig (Carolyn Lewis) Collins of Coralville and Mark (Peggy) Collins of Burlington; one daughter, Chris (Walter) Menza of Tucson, Arizona; five granddaughters, Kassie, Erin, Caitlin, Heidi and Jordan; two great grandsons, Quincy and Kash; two sisters, Violet Saling of Denver, Colorado and Ramona Ciruli of Pueblo, Colorado and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant son, Stephen Craig Collins; sister, Marilyn who along with her two sons were killed in a train wreck at Naperville, Illinois is 1946; and his brother, Marvin who was killed in action during World War II while serving in the Navy.
Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. Friday, March 28th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m.
The funeral service for Mr. Collins will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29th, at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Trevor Davis officiating. The U.S. Navy Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for West Hill United Methodist Church and Great River Hospice.
