Barbara M. Crawford died on Thursday, February 9, 2017.
Born in Lincoln, England on April 9, 1921, she received her college degree from the London School of Economics in 1944 and married Dr. William McCulloch Crawford in 1945. Dr. and Mrs. Crawford emigrated to Canada in 1946 and then moved to Burlington in 1950. Dr. Crawford practiced psychiatry in Burlington and led the Des Moines County Mental Health Association until his death in 1982. Barbara attended Iowa Wesleyan College to receive her teaching certificate and earned a Masters in English from Western Illinois. She taught English at Burlington High School from 1962 until her retirement in 1987. After retiring from BHS, she taught English and writing at Southeastern Iowa Community College for several years. Barbara loved golf and was a member of Burlington Golf Club for over 50 years. She was active in the Girl Scouts, Christ Episcopal Church, Shakespeare Club, Hetta Gilbert and many other civic activities.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Sheila, and is survived by her son Ian of Atlantis, Florida and Natick, Massachusetts, her sister Anne Teaford of Louisville, Kentucky, her granddaughter Molly McKenzie of Chicago, and her grandson Scott Crawford of Edgewater, New Jersey.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday, February 13th, at Lunning Chapel. The funeral service for Mrs. Crawford will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 14th, at Lunning Chapel with Father Carl Mann officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Christ Episcopal Church.
