Obituary
Eating green grapes caused the death last night at 11:05 of James R. Schwartz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schwartz of 1900 South Twelfth Street.
The lad was extremely fond of grapes and devoured a quantity of the unripe fruit. Cholera morbus causing spasms resulted in his death regardless of the efforts of two physicians to save his life.
It is stated that the child, unknown to his parents, had been eating the grapes all this week but the serious effects did not appear until yesterday, and alarmed at his condition his parents summoned two physicians who worked over the boy all last evening.
Tow cups full of grape seeds were taken from the boy early in the evening but the spasms continued and he gradually grew worse until death came to relieve him of the suffering.
James Schwartz was born in Burlington on October 7, 1915, and would have been five years old the next month, had he survived. The little boy was paralyzed on the right side and had been an invalid since birth.
Despite his infirmity, he was always bright and cheerful and was a favorite of the children in the neighborhood who came to visit him every day. His parents have the sympathy of scores of friends. Besides his parents the boy is survived by three brothers, AJ Schwartz of Waverly, Ia; George Schwartz of West Burlington; and John Schwartz at home; four sisters, Mrs. Goldie Geffers of Burlington and Lillian, Melva, and Rachel Schwartz at home, and one grandmother.
The funeral was held from the home Sunday afternoon.
