Obituary
At his home, 931 Hageman Avenue, at 2:00 p.m. yesterday, Mr. Gilbert B. Bonar passed away. He had been ill for several months; confined to his bed for nine weeks. He had suffered intensely but endured courageously. Many friends have visited him and he has been tenderly ministered to by relatives and neighbors, physically and in things of the spirit.
He was born in Des Moines County, near Danville, on June 19, 1862. On December 16, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Frances Rowe. They were given the following children, Carl Bonar, of Yarmouth; Mrs. Bessie Danielson, of Burlington; Bert Bonar, of West Burlington; Mrs. Hazel Graham, of Burlington, and Lester Bonar, at home. There are five grandchildren. Mr. Bonar also leaves behind the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. John Dohrman, of Mt. Union; Mrs. Ella Woodruff, of Denmark ZK Bonar, of Burlington; John Bonar, of Drakesville; William Bonar, of Peking, Illinois; James H. Bonar, of Yarmouth; Charles Bonar, of Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Bonar’s aged father-in-law and mother-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Rowe, of Banville, are of patriarchal rank there, and they are here to sustain their daughter in her great affliction.
Mr. Bonar came with his family to Burlington in 1890 and has resided here since. He was a good man; industrious, faithful, a good neighbor, a true friend. At the same time, he knew his own faults and was free to confess them, while he tried to grasp the realities of the higher life. During the last few months, he entered deeply into that grace that brings peace, rest, and hope.
The funeral will occur from the home at 2:00 p.m. Friday and will be conducted by Pastor TS Bovell, of Walnut Street Baptist church. The burial will be at Aspen Grove and will be private.
