Mrs. Mary A. Bomaster, 98, widow of Henry Bomaster, died at Burlington Hospital yesterday at 12:12 p.m. from injuries sustained Saturday when she fell and broke her hip. She had been a pioneer resident of Burlington, having lived here for 81 years. She had been an invalid for seven years.
She was born Mary Zerber in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, March 29, 1832, coming when she was 17 years old to Burlington, where she has since resided. She was married to Harry Bomaster in 1850, he passed away in 1908.
The Zerbers came to Iowa the year after the state was admitted to the union and their home was first established on the present site of Crapo Park, on the spot where the Corse monument now stands. It was located there because of the proximity of Blackhawk Springs as a water supply was one of the important factors in locating a home in those days.
Mrs. Bomaster was born during the first administration of Andrew Jackson and has lived through the terms of 26 presidents, Abraham Lincoln was just taking office she she was 28 years old. During her life, 23 states have been admitted to the union, and the Civil War, Spanish-American, and World Wars have been fought. She has lived through the greatest period of change and advancement in the history of the world.
She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. A.B. Maddox, with whom she made her home, Mrs. F.W. Liddle, Mrs. C.W. Boger, and Miss Nelle Bomaster; five grandchildren, Mrs. C.E. Ryden and CharlesMaddoz of Burlington; Mrs. Harley Shepherd of Miami, Florida, C.B. Boger, of Kansas City, and H.G. Liddle of Wever, Iowa and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Maddox residence Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock with burial in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The funeral and interment will both be private. The body will be taken to the residence from Prugh’s chapel tomorrow morning.
