Obituary
Charles F. Wedertz, 70 years old, for two years tolltaker at the MacArthur bridge and prominent business man of the city for many years, died yesterday morning at 6:15 o'clock at his home, 120 Grand street. His health failed about a year ago, but he had been confined to bed only since Wednesday. Heart trouble caused his death. Mr. Wedertz was born in Burlington in 1858, and in the early nineties he entered the grocery business with his father, Charles H. Wedertz. Later he became interested in the ice business and continued in that line until 1921. He was a director of the Burlington Ice & Fuel company. Last February ill health forced him to give up his position as tolltaker at the bridge. He was married in 1886 to Pauline Biklen, who survives with with two sons, Clarence H. Wedertz, and Lester B. Wedertz; two grandchildren, Max and Kenneth; one sister, Mrs. J.W. Smith, and three brothers, August H. Wedertz, William H. Wedertz of Chicago and Louis E. Wedertz of Manitowoc, Wis. Mr. Wedertz was an ardent lover of the out-of-doors and was as prominent as a sportsman as he was in the business circles of the city. He was president of the Sand Lake Hunting and Fishing club until the club disbanded when the land on which the club was situated was drained. He was a charter member of the Loyal Order of Moose here and was also a member of the Hawkeye Natives association, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the T.P.A. Arrangements for the funeral will be announced later.
