Betty Louise Ahlstrand, 87, of Fort Madison, died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, August 16, 2009, at Fort Madison Health Center in Fort Madison. Born December 2, 1921, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Len A. and Nora H. Tackenberg Walker. On April 13, 1940, she married Carleton"Keith" Ahlstrand in Nashua. He died August 5, 1990. Mrs. Ahlstrand and her husband owned and operated Ahlstrand Electric for 27 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Fort Madison, of Rebecca Circle and United Methodist Women, and of the Fort Madison women's Club. She was a former member of King's Daughters and past president of Soroptimist International. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Mertens of St. Paul, and Beverly Mertens of Fort Madison; five grandchildren; 12 great-grand- children; and one great-great-grandchild. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will be from 1 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Ahlstrand will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Barr Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Branda Goodall officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Memorials have been established for Neuro- fibromytosis research and Alzheimer's research.
