Virgil D. "Mike" Watkins, 95, of Burlington, died at Burlington Care Center on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at 9:50 a.m. Born on December 14, 1914, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Dwight Edwards and Erma Fouts Watkins. He married Marie Elizabeth Huston on April 15, 1939, in Kahoka, Missouri. She died on March 17, 2010. As a young man Virgil was employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. He worked at IAAP for 35 years, retiring as a foreman. He loved to go fishing anywhere and anytime. He also enjoyed the river and bird watching. He was a St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was of the Protestant faith. Virgil is survived by two daughters, Sharon K. (Ralph) Ives and Celia M. (John) Anderson, both of Burlington, Iowa; four granddaughters, Tray (Jeff) West of Burlington, Iowa, Shelly (Rick) Rustad of Hudson, Iowa, Christy (Chris) Kelly of Burlington, Iowa, and Kimberly (Nick) Dominguez of Glendale, Arizona; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great- great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, and one sister, Isal D. Baxter. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Prugh's Chapel in Burlington, where family will receive friends. The funeral for Mr. Watkins will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Prugh's Chapel, with the Revs. Rick Rustad and Chris Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for Des Moines County Humane Society.
