John W. Ward, 85 year old civil war veteran died at his home 608 South Plane street Tuesday night at 7:45 o'clock after an extended illness. He was born in New York state, November 14, 1840, and came to Burlington in 1870, living here since that time. He was a carpenter but of late has retired from active work. He was a member of the 12th Iowa infantry during the civil war. He was one of the oldest members of the First Methodist church, of Burlington, and also a member of the G.A.R. His wife survives. Funeral services will be held from the residence at a time to be announced later.
