Sgt. Charles Edward Gardiner, father of 2 children, was killed in action March 3 in Germany, according to a telegram from the war department to his wife, Mrs. Henrietta Gardiner, 1314 S. Central avenue. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Gardiner, 1620 West avenue. Gardiner served with the 8th infantry of the first army. He left the states Jan. 5, after training at Camp Robinson, Ark. He was a machinist at the Murray Iron Works Co. before entering service in the latter part of August, 1944. Born Jan. 13, 1918, Gardiner attended Corse school and was graduated from Burlington high school. On April 11, 1937, he was married to Henrietta Peterman. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran church. In addition to his widow and children, Charles Edward 6, and Ronald 4, he is survived by his parents; a brother, George K. Gardiner, 817 Leebrick street; 2 sisters, Mrs. Leonard Melburg, 1620 West avenue, and Mrs. William Nafstad, Minneapolis, Minn.; 3 nephews and one niece.
