Howard James Wagler, 27, who lived on a farm near Mediapolis, was instantly killed early Friday morning when the motorcycle he was riding was struck by an auto driven by Jack Woodruff, 21, Mediapolis route 2. The accident happened on route 61, 5 miles south of Mediapolis about 1:20 a.m. According to an Iowa highway patrolman, the car and motorcycle were both heading north. Woodruff told investigators he was driving through a fine mist of rain and that visibility was poor. Investigators said the Woodruff car crashed into the rear of the motorcycle, hurling the machine a considerable distance along the highway. Wagler suffered severe head and body injuries. The body was taken to Giles funeral home in Burlington. Des Moines county Coroner R. O. Giles said an inquest will be held at the funeral home Monday at 7:30 p.m. Wagler was employed at the J.I. Case company in Burlington and had worked Thursday night on the 4 p.m. to midnight shift. His father, Joe Wagler, lives at 315 1/2 S. Marshall street, Burlington. His mother lives in Chicago, Ill. Mr and Mrs. C.T. Wagler, 1203 Washington street, Burlington, are his grandparents. Wagler lived with his grandfather, Lee McClintic, on a farm near here. Woodruff is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ard Woodruff, and a nephewof L.L. Woodruff, Des Moines county superintendent of schools.
