Miss Maybelle Waalen, resident of Burlington 17 years and operator of the Vanity Beauty Shop in partnership with Miss Clara Aberle, died at 4:35 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in Mercy hospital after an illness of abour a week. Miss Waalen was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Theodore E. Waalen and was born at Glenwood, Minn. There she attended the public schools and Glenwood academy and completed training as a nurse at Monmouth, Ill. For three years she served as superintendent of the Glenwwod, Minn., hospital and during the war served as a Red Cross nurse at Camp Dodge and Ft. Des Moines. She resumed nursing for a short time after the war, at Miles City, Mont., later coming to Burlington. Surviving are three sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Warren Wales of Burlington, Mrs. Julian Cole of Newport, Wash., Miss Tilda Waalen of Glenwood, Minn., Elmer and Milo Waalen of Glenwood and Carl Waalen of Minneapolis, Minn. She is the first one of a family of seven children to die. Funeral services will be held in Prugh's chapel Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock and friends are invited. Dr. R.B. Blythe will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove cemetery.
