William H. Wardan, 89, Civil war veteran , passed away at his home, 1802 South Main street, at 12:50 o'clock last night after an extended illness. He had lived a retired life for years and on Jan. 18 of this year, he and his wife celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Mr. Wardan was born in Pennsylvania, May 15, 1842, later moving with his parents to Kankakee, Ill. He enlisted in Company F, 76th Illinois infantry and became a sergeant. he was wounded in the last battle of the war at Fort Blakely. He was the third man to enter the fort adn when the color bearer was shot down he seized the colors and led the men on in a charge. Mr. Wardan came to Buriington from Kankakee in 1871 and was married here in January of the following year to Miss Fannie E. Wooten, who survives him. He was a charter member of Harrison Avenue M.E. church. He engaged in the insurance business but has been retired for the past forty years. His health has been failing for several years and he has been a shut-in since last August. He was a member of the A.O.U.W. lodge. Besides his widow he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Edward A. Fox of Chicago and Mrs. Fred E. Barton of Los Angeles; three sons, William H. Wardan, Jr. of Chicago and Ray Wardan and Clifford Wardan, at home; one sister, Mrs. Ellen Wells of Long Beach, Calif. and two grandchildren. A daughter and eight brothers and sisters preceded him in death. The body was taken to Prugh's chapel and funeral arrangements will be announced later.
