David Lee Gibbs, 73, of Burlington, died at 10:38 PM Friday, July 14, 2017, at his home.
Born October 20, 1943, in Burlington, he was the son of Warren E. and Ruth G. Smith Gibbs. On January 14, 1966, he married Barbara Jean Ross in Biggsville, IL.
David was a welder at J.I. Case for 28 years, and also worked at General Electric for 11 years.
He was a 1960 graduate of Burlington High School.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran. David served in Germany while he was in the service. He enjoyed touring Europe while he was there.
He was a Non-Demoninational Christian and had a very close relationship with God. He was a member of the Des Moines County Historical Society and the Studebaker Club. He enjoyed being outdoors, raising catfish in his pond, mushroom hunting, restoring old Studebaker's, anything history, car shows, and most of all being with his family.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Mark A. (Cindy) Gibbs of Broken Bow, OK; four daughters, Debbie Gibbs (Sam) Pinney of Ashland, IL, Dana L. Gibbs of Chicago, IL, Tami Gibbs (Chuck) Fries of Omaha, NE, Wendy Gibbs (Cliff) Mather of Mount Union, IA; eight grandchildren, Lyndzie (Kyle) Vogelzang, Lauren Pinney, Shanna Gibbs, Tyler Gibbs, Courtney Gibbs, Andrew (Abby) Orr, Laura (John) Hocaoglu, and Michael Orr; five great-grandchildren, Aeriana Gibbs, R.J. Banks, Jaylon Banks, Austyn Orr, and Connor Orr; three sisters, Lynda Gibbs (Harold) Mettler of AR, Carol Gibbs Parker of Rushville, IL, and Janet Gibbs (Don) Scott of IL; one brother, Steven Gibbs of Riverton, WY; nine nieces & nephews, Sheri Hare McCulley, Scott Gibbs, Doug Bergquist, Don Bergquist, Kathy Rebman, Julie Dominique, Laurie Perry, Tammy Steward, and Kevin Steward.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two nephews, Heath Gibbs and Robert Bergquist.
Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
The funeral service for Mr. Gibbs will be 10:00 AM Thursday, July 20, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Titus Lehmen & Patricia Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the University of Iowa Foundation for Brain Cancer Research.
