Fredabelle Curtis, 97, of Spirit Lake died Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. Born Jan. 1, 1914, in Walnut Township, West Des Moines, she was the daughter of Clarence T. and Edna Brown Good. On April 18, 1945, she married Frank J. "Pete" Beard in Burlington. He died April 27, 1976. On March 21, 1982, she married Ernest David Curtis in Yuma, Ariz. He died Nov. 3, 1995. Mrs. Curtis taught elementary school in Iowa for 38 years. She taught in Nodaway, Panora, Brooklyn and Chariton, and for 29 years in Burlington, retiring in 1979. She lived in Spokane, Wash., and Yuma, and moved to Wel-Life in Spirit Lake in 2002. She attended Pierce rural school in Walnut Township, and graduated from Valley High School in 1931. She earned a bachelor of science degree in education at Drake University in 1935 and did graduate studies at University of Iowa and Drake University. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Burlington, where she sang in the choir as soprano soloist, and a member of United Methodist Church. She was a member of the DAR chapter in Burlington and life member of Iowa State Education Association. She enjoyed traveling and camping. Survivors include two sons, Douglas Beard of Springville and Eugene Beard of Swisher; one daughter, Louise Erbes of Spirit Lake; and four grandchildren. Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters. The graveside memorial service for Mrs. Curtis will be this spring in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.Memorials have been established for the American Diabetes Association and a charitable organization of choice.
