Loran Lee "Pete" Cheely, Jr., 48, of Burlington, died Friday, February 27, 2009, in Birmingham, Alabama. Born December 29, 1960, in Burlington, he was the son of Loran and Marilyn Wegener Cheely, Sr. On January 16, 1981, he married Barbara Sutherland in Burlington. Mr. Cheely worked 10 years as a truck driver/owner at Diamond Transportation, and was currently employed at Rolling Oats in Muscatine. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant. He enjoyed driving trucks. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Loran Cheely "Petey" III of Iowa, Levi Scott Cheely of Burlington, and Jeremiah Scott Cheely at home; two daughters, Stephanie Marie Cheely of Burlington, and Trinity Michelle Cheely at home; two grandchildren, Daniel Hand and Chelsie Swafford; three sisters, Alice Foster and Cindy Cheely both of Burlington, and Rebecca "Becky" Cheely of Newport Richie, Florida; and several nieces and nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Prugh's Chapel in Burlington. The funeral for Mr. Cheely will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Van Hooser officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
