Obituary
A telegram to the family here, late yesterday afternoon, announced the death of John p. Zurawski, president of the Burlington Paper Co., in Los Angeles, whither with Mrs. Zurawski and his daughter Helen he had gone two weeks ago for the benefit of his health. He succumbed to a heart affliction, dropping dead in the lobby of the Gates hotel. The body will be brought to Burlington at once and the time for the funeral announced later. Mr. Zurawski was born in Germany, September 16, 1859, and came to the United States when 18 years of age, locating near Belle Plain, Ia., where he secured work on a farm. Saving his money he abandoned farm work after several years and bought an interest in a lumber company in Ramsen, Ia. He continued in this business for four years and sold out when appointed deputy county treasurer. He served in this office for two years and at the end of that time assisted in the organization of the German State bank at Le Mars, taking the position of cashier, and remaining with this bank until 1900, when attracted by the business opportunities of Burlington, he came here and purchased an interest n the Hyde Paper Co., in which the John Blaul's Sons firm was substantially interested. In the year of 1902 when the addition to the Blaul building was completed, the business was reorganized under the name of Burlington Paper Co., and was removed from the now Gardner & Gould building to the new quarters in the Blaul building. At the time Mr Zurawski was manager and treasurer of the company. Another reorganization of the business was made in 1909, when the Blaul interests were bought by Mr. Zuraski and others in the organization and then removed to the Boeck building adjoining the Central fire station on Fifth street. In 1918, the commodious building of the Burlington Soap Co. on North Main street, the present home of the company, was purchased and this became headquarters and here big strides were made in expanding the affairs of the corporation. Mr. Zurawaski was a hard worker and shrewd business man. He was in personal touch with every detail of his business, but found time with all these duties to devote a good measure of attention to civic duties. He assisted in the organization of the Boy Scout movement here and for a number of years served as president of the Scout council here. Mr. Zurawski also rendered valuable aid in organizing the Greater Burlington association and in all its activities he entered with hearty spirit. He also was a member of the Rotary club and took keen pleasure in his connection there. Something of a "joiner" he was active in the work of Malta, Lodge No 318, Burlington Lodge 84, B.P.O.E. the Knights of Pythias and the T.P.A. He loved our of doors pastimes and his favorite sport was fishing, being one of the early members of Carthage Lake club. A man of big heart but becoming modesty he did much good his quiet way and always could be counted upon to respond to every call in the interest of the needy. He was a faithful member of the First Evangelical church and for many years secretary of the Sunday School. Mr. Zurawski was married in the year 1884 to Miss Luise Sallach. He is survived by his widow and five children, Helen E. formerly chief nurse in the John Hopkins hospital; Arnold, a dentist in Chicago; Mrs. Guy Luthy and Mrs. T.R. Williamson, and R.A., of the city.
