Lester F. Cheely, 83, of Burlington, died at 9:23 AM, Monday, February 27, 2006, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born March 30, 1922, in Fort Madison, Iowa, he was the son of Lester F. and Alice Moss Cheely. On December 24, 1945 he married Claire B. Orndorff in Kansas City, MO. Mr. Cheely was a distributor for Royal Crown Cola and Pepperidge Farms for many years. He was U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II where he was a Flight Deck Sergeant and gunner in a B-17 in Africa and Southeast Asia. He had received a Purple Heart. He was a member of American Association of Retired Persons. He was an avid bowler. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking and tinkering around with tools. Survivors include his wife, Claire; three daughters, Sherry Ohlmutz, of Burlington, Melanie Kewin of Omaha, NE, and Lisa Siegel of Hinsdale, IL; one son, Gary Cheely of Burlington; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Lynn Wahl of Burlington, Barbara Troutman of West Burlington, and Elizabeth Sanchez of California; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers. As per the request of Mr. Cheely his body has been cremated. The private family graveside committal service and inurnment for Mr. Cheely will be Friday at Aspen Grove Cemetery with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating.
