Ddavid R. Ziegler, 58 years old, vice president of Drake Hardware company, died of heart failure at Burlington hospital last evening, after an illness of only about twelve hours. His death came as a sudden shock to his friends and family alike. Altho Mr. Ziegler had been in failing health for some time, he had been in normal health of late, had tended to his duties at his office and on Wednesday night attended lodge at the Masonic temple. He was taken ill yesterday morning and removed to the hospital about 9:30. Death came at 6;15 o'clock last evening. Mr. Ziegler was born in Augusta township Des Moines county September 115, 1866. After receiving his elementary education in the country schools he attended teachers institute, received his certificate and taught for several years. He then attended Elliott's Business college in Burlington and upon graduation, went to work for Drake & Dayton, wholesale hardware, which was later conducted under the name of Lyman H. Drake and is now known as the Drake Hardware company. With the exception of a few months spent in the employ of the C.F. Schmidt Hardware company, he spent thirty-five years with the same company. Mr. Ziegler traveled south-eastern Iowa for twenty-five years, selling his firm's goods ad few men were held in higher esteem in his trade. Later he became vice president and had under his charge much important executive work. While a traveling salesman, Mr. Ziegler took much interest in the Travelers Protective association. He served Post G. of Burlington, as its president for two years, and later was elected as state president of the Iowa division. He also was a past counselor of the U.C.T. Mr. Ziegler was a member of the First M.E. church, the Greater Burlington association, Patriot lodge 650, A.F.&A.M. Iowa Chapter N. 1, R.A.M., Zerubbabel Council No. 20, R.&S.M., St Omar Commandry No. 15, Knights Templar of Burlington, and Zerephath Consistory No. 4 and Kaaba Shrine Temple of Davenport. During the world war he was active in Liberty loan work.On Novemebr 26, 1891, Mr. Ziegler married Mary Ann Fisher, of Lomax, ,ill., who survives, with one son, Ralph Ziegler, who is active in American Legion affairs of Burlington and the state, and one daughter, Helen Ziegler, now a student at the National Kindergarten college of Chicago. One daughter, Gladys, died ten years ago at the age of 18. He leaves a sister, Mrs. Harriett Fonner, of Weiser, Idaho, and three brothers, William, of Augusta township, Samuel Dillinger, of Bennington, Kansas, and Daniel Dillinger, of Goodland,Kansas. The family home is 923 North Third street. Funeral services probably will be held Sunday afternoon, altho the arrangements have not been fully completed.
