Obituary
Emanuel Zerber, a well known resident of the city, passed away at the Soldiers' home at Marshalltown last evening at 6:45 o'clock. Mr. Zerber had been in feeble health for several days, and his son William was called to the home and was present last evening when his father passed away. The deceased has been in the Soldiers' home for the past two years and his hundreds of friends here will be grieved to learn of his demise. Mr. Zerber was born in Pennsylvania about 62 years ago. He came to Burlington some forty-five years ago and enlisted from this town in the army when the call for volunteers came in "61. He served all through the period of the war and at its close returned to this city and engaged in business. He was proprietor of a saloon on Main street opposite the old C.B. & Q. depot and afterward rented the Annex hotel, now the Heyer house, which he ran successfully for about fifteen years, when Mrs. Heyer assumed charge of the hotel. His wife died on the 15th of September, 1903. She was the daughter of Mrs. William Sterling. The deceased was a man of generous impulses and pleasant disposition. He made many friends and kept them, and his passing will be sincerely mourned. The remains will be brought to Burlington for burial.
