Obituary
Thomas F. Babb, a native of Burlington and for many years a resident of the city died in Galesburg Thursday afternoon after two weeks of severe illness. For a year Mr. Babb had been suffering with consumption but had been able, up to two weeks ago, to continue his work.
The Galesburg Republica-Register speaks highly of Mr. Babb, saying:
“Mr. Babb was born in Burlington, Iowa, in 1866. He received his education in the Burlington public schools and later, until three years ago, was employed in the Burlington yards in that city, working at different times as brakeman and switchman. Three years ago, he left Burlington and went to Monmouth, where he lived until his coming to Galesburg a year ago on a farm three miles southeast of that city. At Monmouth, he met and married shortly after his arrival Daisy Jacoby, to whom have since been born three children, Lola, Tommy, and Jack(his wife was expecting at the time of Tom’s death) all of whom are at home. A year ago this month the family moved to Galesburg. He was employed during this time at Frost’s foundry. There survive him besides his wife and the children, the father, Samuel Babb of Burlington, who was in Galesburg at the time of the death, four brothers, and two sisters. The brothers are George Babb of Galesburg, an engineer on the Burlington; William Babb, a switchman for the Burlington at Burlington; John Babb of Monmouth, employed in the Burlington shops in that city, and Eugene Babb, a steel worker in Chicago. The sisters are Mrs. Eliza Moore and Mrs. Emma Cross, both of Burlington, where the mother, the only other decedent in the family, lies buried.”
The dying man’s wish was complied with. The remains were brought to this city last evening. The funeral cortege will leave the family residence of LB Lacy, 1300 Summer Street, and Louisa Street, Saturday, November 22, at 2 pm and proceed to Grace Methodist church, corner Central Ave. and Angular Street. Services at 2:30 pm. Friends of the family are invited to attend. Interment in Aspen Grove cemetery.
