Obituary
Mrs. Caroline Schmitt passed away yesterday afternoon at her home, No. 1219 North Sixth street, after a lingering illness of some six weeks. She was a pioneer and was widely known and highly respected. Caroline Ulrich was born at Muehlhausen, Elsace, Germany, November 22, 1830, and was married to Robert Schmitt, August 1, 1858, at Quincy, Ill. The following day the young couple came to Burlington, and this city remained their home. Robert Schmitt conducted dye works, operated a vinegar factory and was the amusement manager or opera house manager of the early days. The family lived for many years on the lots where the court house now stands. The husband died August 20, 1868. Of the children born to this happy union, Robert, Albert and Charles preceded the mother to the other shore. The survivors are: Mrs. Dena Bott and Oscar Schmitt, of Columbus, OH., and Miss Emma Schmitt, at home. Mrs. Schmitt was an estimable woman and had long been a member of the First Germain Evangelical church. The arrangements for the funeral will be announced later.
