Obituary
Charles Wedertz, one of Burlington's well known business men, died at St. Anthony hospital in Denver, Col., at 12:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. A telegram announcing his death was received last night and the news will bring with it sorrow and regret to many Orchard City friends. Mr. Wedertz went west some time ago in hopes of regainig a broken down health. He had been a sufferer for several years from asthma and kindred troubles. Although he was known to have been taken to the hospital his friends had not learned of his critical condition. A prominent business man in speaking of Mr. Wedertz's death this morning said: "It is quite a shock to a good many friends. He was a mighty popular man with the down town crowd. you know there was such a spirit of good feellowship about him all the time that he couldn't help being popular. He was one of the most entertaining fellows I ever associated out together and he was along there was no question but that we would have a good time. He was the right kind of a business man, too; upright and square in all his dealings and his death will be a severe loss to the community.' Charles Wedertz was born in Buchholtz in Bueckeburg, Germany, December 7, 1834. He came to America when a boy and settled early in Burlington. He learned the machinist's trade. In the early fifties he got the gold fever and spent several years on the coast. Returning to this city he entered the grocery business and made a success of it. His wife, who was Marie Scheurs, together with four sons and one daughter, survives him. He was a member of Carthage Lake club, the A.O.U.W., I.O.O.F., Des Moines County Sterbekasse-Verein and the Mutual Aid society of the First German Evangelical church. The remains will be brought to this city for interment. An announcement of the funeral services will be made later.
