Obituary
John S. Wertz, an old and widely known resident of Des Moines county, died suddenly at 7 o'clock this morning at his residence on West Jefferson street, in this city. Mr. Wertz was in his usual good health yesterday and came down town. He was taken ill in the night and passed away this morning. The deceased was born on February 20, 1836, in New Bedford county, Pennsylvania, and came to Iowa in 1858, settling at Middletown, where he conducted a store. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted in Company K, Fourth Iowa infantry, and served several years. At the end of the war he returned to Middletown to live, and came to Burlington about fifteen years ago. He was a member of the G.A.R. and of the Odd Fellows. He was married at Hoppens Mills, Ill., to Miss Anna Elliott and is survived by his wife, three children, Fran E. Wertz, Miss Stella Wertz, of Chicago, and Mrs. H.J. Hungerford, of Burlington; also by two sisters, Mrs. Carrie McCoy, of Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. J.L. McMaken, of Burlington, and one brother, Lem L. Wertz, of Queen City, Mo. The funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the family home.
