Obituary
Burlington lost one of her best citizens when Edward Hagemann passed away at 1 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, No. 907 Starr avenue, Until about two weeks ago he seemed to be enjoying almost perfect health, and then the break-up came, and soon it became apparent to the watchers that the end of a busy, useful life was drawing near. Edward Hagemann was born in a small town in the principality of Waldeck, Germany, July 4, 1830. He received a good education in the old country and came to America at the age of twenty-three years. Two years later he came to Burlington. He always held that honest work honored him who did it, and so he did not look for a position, but took whatever jobs offered. And it is recalled that he did honest faithful work then as ever after. In the course of time, he accumulated sufficient to enable him to engage in the retail grocery trade. A disastrous fire in 1857 did not discourage him and he remained in that business and did well until 1867, when in partnership with Mr. Charles Starker, he entered the wholesale grocery field.
