Obituary
Mrs. Edward Hagemann died at ten minutes after ten o'clock this morning, at her home on the corner of West and Starr avenues. Death was caused by appendicitis. Mrs. Hagemann was apparently perfectly well up to last Wednesday night, when she became suddenly ill and was obliged to take to her bed. She grew steadily worse until yesterday afternoon, when she was operated upon, in the hope of cutting short the course of the terrible disease. The operation was in vain, and from the time it was performed Mrs. Hagemann's decline was steady and rapid until death came this morning to relieve her sufferings. Only about one month ago Mr. and Mrs. Hagemann returned home from an extended summer trip in the east, having spent about two months on the coast of Maine and at other resorts. Mrs. Hagemann's health was good, and she came home feeling refreshed and strengthened by the trip. From that time until last Wednesday night, as stated above, there were no signs of failing health. Mrs. Hagemann was an estimable woman, and during her many years of residence in Burlington had won many steadfast friends, who will mourn her loss. Mrs. Hagemann was born in Germany, October 8, 1839. Her maiden name was Emma Knust. In her infancy she was brought by her parents to America, and was reared to womanhood in St. Louis, Mo. In 1857 she came to Burlington, and the following year was married to Mr. Adolph Meyer, who was at that time associated with Mr. Charles Starker in the wholesale grocery business. Mr. Meyer died June 26, 1864. Almost thirty years afterward, in 1891, Mrs. Meyer was married to Mr. Edward Hagemann, and they have lived happily together since that time. Mrs. Hageman leaves three children: Mr. George A. Meyer, of St. Louis; Mrs. Louise Oberle, wife of Adolph Oberle, and Mrs. Bertha Meyer, wife of Theodore Meyer, St. Louis. The mother of the deceaased, Mrs. Bertha Knust, is still living, being 79 years of age. Four sisters also survive Mrs. Hagemann, namely: Mrs. Ida Schmidt, of Chicago; Miss Mary Knust, Mrs. August Schlapp and Mrs. Augusta Winzer, all of Burlington. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made. The children of Mrs. Hagemann will arrive home tonight from St. Louis, and the announcement of the funeral will be made tomorrow.
The funeral service will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday, at the home, and the body will be taken to Davenport that evening for cremation. It is requested that no flowers be sent.
