Mary Adelaide Jones, 95, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, died Sunday, January 15, 2017.
Mary Adelaide was born January 10, 1922, in Shickley, NE, she was the daughter of Elmer and Ramona Troupe Hansen. They later moved to Lincoln where she attended school. After a year at Ward Belmont in Nashville, TN, Mary Adelaide attended the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1942. Soon after she moved to California to work “for the war effort”. While working at Lockheed in Bakersfield she met the love of her life, Norman Nelson Jones, Jr. a tall, dark, and handsome Army Air pilot from Burlington, IA. They were married on November 6, 1943, in Lincoln, Nebraska and spent the rest of WWII moving some twenty times from airbase to airbase. Norm and Mary Ad, as he called her from the beginning, settled in Burlington where he went to work for his dad in the family business, Drake Hardware Co, and their family grew to include four children.
Mary Ad was actively involved with her community from the beginning: Hetta Gilbert Society, The Burlington Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Civic Music, First Congregational Church and more. She enjoyed her bridge club, Ladies Day golf and dances at the Burlington Golf Club, picnics and parties at Crystal Lake, and Panhellenic. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta for 75 years attending yearly gatherings until 2015. At age forty, she earned her pilots license which she maintained for 25 years.
She and Norm traveled extensively both nationally and abroad. In later years, Mary Ad and Norm made regular stays in Colorado and South Florida.
Survivors include three daughters, Jessica (Chaz Leary) Jones of New Orleans, LA, Betsy (Bill) Williams of Baton Rouge, LA, & Sarah (Wally) Krall of Lander, WY; one daughter-in-law, Helen Chopko Jones; one sister-in-law, Harriet Jones Chappuies; ten grandchildren, Josh Leary, Johanna Wiseman, Jed Paulson, Jesse Wiseman, Sarah Riley, Elizabeth Williams, Andrew Hunter, Nathan Hunter, Wyatt Williams, & Mary Devin Hunter; eleven great-grandchildren; two nephews, David Chappuies, & John Chappuies and their families.
Besides her husband of 61 years, she was preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Norman N. Jones, III.
The Graveside Committal Service for Mary Jones will be 11:00 AM Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Aspen Grove Cemetery.
