Obituary
Theodore Blaul, vice president of the John Blaul’s Sons company, died at 11:50 last night at his home, 622 Court Street. He had only been ill about a week and his condition did not become serious until yesterday. A number of local physicians were called into consultation on his case, and a specialist arrived from Chicago on train No. 5 last night. His illness started with a cold and developed into mastoid trouble. He was 64 years old.
Mr. Blaul is the third son of the originator of the John Blaul’s Sons company to die within sixteen months. Charles Blaul died on December 3, 1924, and Louis Blaul followed in death on January 31, 1925. John Blaul is the only surviving son of the late John Blaul, and Miss Melia Blaul a sister living at the old family home on South Sixth Street also survives.
Mr. Blaul had devoted virtually all his life to the development of the John Blaul’s Sons company in Burlington with his brothers building it up to one of the leading business enterprises of the city and state.
He was born in Burlington February 23, 1862, and was educated in the public schools and in a business college of this city. He practically grew up in the John Blaul’s Sons company and at the age of 18 took up a permanent place in the store, acting as a shipping clerk for two years. Later he went on the road as a commercial traveler, thus representing the house for five years; and after being admitted to the partnership in 1885, he took charge of the coffee roasting department, which was then added to the business, and for five years remained at its head.
For the succeeding five years, he was city salesman, and when the Burlington Canning Company was established as a branch of the firm in 1895, he assumed its management. He was treasurer of the company for many years, and at the time of his death was vice president.
In 1886, Mr. Blaul was married to Miss Emma L. Unterkircher. She survives with three children, Mrs. Phebe C. Bock, wife of Fred Bock, Theodore F. Blaul of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Emma Louise Blaul at home. One son, Arthur Philip died several years ago.
Funeral services for Theodore Blaul will be conducted from the residence, 622 Court Street, Monday afternoon at 3:30. The body will be interred in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
