Milton A. Blaul, 78, 809 S. Garfield, retired president of the John Blaul Sons Company, wholesale grocery distributors in Burlington for nearly 100 years before selling the firm to the Benner Tea Company in 1954, died Saturday at his home.
He was born in Burlington, on July 4, 1884, the son of John and Louise Dewein Blaul, and married Anna Gerdom in Burlington, on Oct. 30, 1907.
Blaul and his brother Mark now dead operated the John Blaul Sons Company for over 50 years before their joint retirement and sale to Benners eight years ago.
The Blaul name was prominent in the Burlington grocery business as far back as 1857 when the first John Blaul came here and opened a retail grocery store on Front street.
Twelve years later the family started a wholesale grocery business which John Blaul, Jr., and three brothers incorporated in 1903. When the elder Blaul died in 1933, Milton and Mark headed the company as president and vice president, respectively.
Milton Blaul was a member of the First Congregational church, Patriotic Lodge No. 630 AF and AM, Iowa Chapter No. 1 Royal Arch Masons, Zerubbabel Council No. 22 R and SM, St. Omer Commandery, Knights Templar, Zarepath Consistory No. 4 and Kaaba Temple of Davenport.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Benjamin Platter, Minneapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held in Prugh’s chapel Monday at 3:30 pm. The Rev. E. William Strauser will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
