Obituary
John Louis Blaul, 46, one of Des Moines county’s most prominent farmers, died of a heart attack at 2:20 am Wednesday at his farm home, 4 ½ miles south of Yarmouth.
Until he was stricken, he apparently was in good health and had continued to do his regular farm duties.
Blaul was active in the Farm Bureau, Des Moines county cattle feeders association, and was a charter member of the county soil conservation commission.
Particularly interested in soil conservation, he was a commissioner until recently and had carried out extensive conservation work on his farm. It was the site of a 1948 soils field day, co-sponsored by the Hawk-Eye Gazette, which was toured by a soils group last week.
Blaul had farmed near Yarmouth since 1934. He was born May 21, 1904, in Burlington, and was married Nov. 24, 1928, in El Paso, Tex. To the former Marion Hurd. He was educated in Burlington schools, graduating from the local high school in 1923. He also attended Shattuck Military Academy and had completed 1 ½ years at the University of Pennsylvania when called back to Burlington by the death of his father Louis Blaul.
He then lived here, managing farms near Muscatine, until purchasing the farm near Yarmouth. Blaul was a member of First Congregational church.
Surviving are his widow; a son, John Louis Blaul, Jr., and a daughter, Joan M. Blaul, both at home; 4 sisters, Mrs. James S. Mathewson, Madison, Wis.; Mrs. Harry G. Barnes, St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. John D Gray and Betty Blaul, both of Evanson, Ill.; and a brother, James P Blaul, Minneapolis, Minn. His parents are dead.
Funeral services for John Louis Blaul, 46, of Yarmouth, a prominent Des Moines county farmer who died suddenly Wednesday, will be at 2 pm Friday at Burnett Wallen funeral home.
Rev. Bruce Masselink, pastor of First Congregational church, will officiate. Friends are invited to the services, but burial in Aspen rove cemetery will be private. Pallbearers will be Wesley Swiler, James and Frank Schramm, Warren P. Clark, Paul J Hamelman and Blythe Conn.
