Obituary
Mrs. Katherine Blank, 85 years old who was found overcome by gas in her home, 1318 North Eighth Street, the morning of March 11, died from the effects at Mercy hospital yesterday afternoon at 2:00. Mrs. Blank lived alone and had been in failing health this winter. It is believed that when she turned on her gas heater after getting up on March 11, she suffered a slight stroke of paralysis or a fainting spell before she had a chance to light it. She was found in the gas-filled room by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Fred Hugg.
Mrs. Blank was a native of Ohio and came to this state during the early part of her life. She was first married in Burlington to Charles Hugg and they went to Fairfield to live. When the Civil war broke out, Mr. Hugg volunteered in the Union forces and when his enlistment expired, he came home for a few weeks and then re-enlisted. It was during this second period of service that he was stricken with typhoid fever and died in Tennesee.
Following her husband’s death, Mrs. Hugg and her family of three sons moved to Burlington, and later she was married to George Blank. He too preceded her in death. She is survived however by seven sons and two daughters, who are as follows: Charles, John, and Fred Hugg and George, Andrew, Leon, Dennis and Lizzie Blank, all of Burlington, and Mrs. Lee McGibbon of Peetz, Colo.
Mrs. Blank’s funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the residence of her son, George Blank, 1328 North Sixth Street.
