Col. Nathaniel l. Howard, about 64, a former resident of Burlington, died Friday in Pasadena, Calif. A native of Fairfield, he lived at Winnetka, Ill. He was the son of Elmer A. and Mary L. Howard, and a graduate of West Point military academy. After serving in the army for a short time after his graduation,he resigned and was with the Burlington route. He served for a time as division superintendent of the railroad at Burlington. During World War i he commanded the 13th railway engineer group, one of the first to land in Europe. He was awarded the French Legion of Honor. After the war he became president of the Great Western railroad. He retired about 13 years ago. Col. Howard was well known around Wapello, where he owns a large farm, upon which he spent considerable time. He is one of the few persons in this area listed in "Who's Who in America." He is survived by his widow, the former Marie Blaul, Burlington. He was a nephew of Mrs. C.C. Clark, of Burlington. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
