Obituary
Bischof- Died in this city at 4:00 am Aug. 23, Emil Bischof, of heart disease. Funeral today, Friday, at 3:00 pm from the residence of the family, corner of Seventh and Court Streets.
Mr. Bischof had been a resident of Burlington for nearly four years, having come here in the autumn of 1873, to take a managing interest in the Iowa Tribune. After conducting the business department of that paper for some time, he retired from it and commenced the publication of the Freie Presse, a tri-weekly German newspaper in the interest of the German democrats. He recently closed out that paper and had been engaged, latterly, in the establishment of a similar journal in Omaha.
He returned to Burlington last Thursday. Complaining of ill-health, but avoided showing any special signs thereof out of a desire to keep his wife from feeling alarmed about him. Yesterday morning she found that he was worse. She sent for Dr. Howe, but before he arrived Mr. Bischof had breathed his last.
The deceased was a German by birth. He was one of the famous “forty-eighters,” who fled to this country shortly after that memorable struggle. His first American residence was in Cincinnati. He afterwards lived in Evansville and was a member of the Indiana legislature from that district. He was a newspaperman of great experience. He leaves a large family, his wife, six sons, and one daughter.
