Obituary
Arthur Blaul, 23 years old and one of the most prominent young men of Burlington passed away yesterday afternoon at St. Luke’s hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after a brief illness, death being the result of blood poisoning, following an operation in which he had his tonsils removed.
He was in Burlington a week ago visiting his parents and those of his wife who was formerly Miss Katherine Churchill. At that time, although he had suffered the operation, he was supposedly doing as well as could be expected and no serious results were expected. Upon his return to Cedar Rapids, where he had been making his home, he contracted blood poisoning and the end came on Sunday afternoon. At his bedside were his wife, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theo Blaul, and Mr. and Mrs. AT Churchill.
A young man of high character, counting all of his large acquaintances as his friends, Arthur Blaul’s passing will be regretted by all who knew him. He was democratic, likable, and made friends easily. He had a bright future and was taking his place earnestly in the business world of young men in a way which inspired confidence and which assured him both persona.l success and an asset to any community.
The remains will be brought to Burlington this evening from Cedar Rapids. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Arthur Philip Blaul was born in Burlington, August 22, 1896, and practically his entire life has been spent in that city. For a short time, he was attending school away from the city and also when he was in the military service. He completed the grade school and High school courses in Burlington, thus getting the foundation for his education at home, and later spent some time attending the Kentucky Military school and for one year attended the school of finance at the University of Pennsylvania.
In October 1917, Arthur was a volunteer into the military service of the United States in the war with Germany. He enlisted in Chicago, Ill., and from there was sent to Jacksonville, Fla., later being transferred to the aviation camp at Arcadia and still later being sent to an officer’s training school. He was commissioned a lieutenant of artillery.
On June 7, 1919, he was married to Miss Katherine Churchill. It was in truth a splendid marriage and the future was thought to be exceedingly bright for both of them.
During vacation periods the deceased had been employed at the John Blaul’s Sons Company here and had learned the business in a thorough manner, having worked in various departments. Shortly before his marriage, he had worked at the company’s branch at Cedar Rapids, and following his marriage, the young couple moved to that city.
Mr. Blaul is survived by his wife, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Blaul of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Phoebe Blaul-Bock, of St. Louis, Mo., and Miss Emma Louise Blaul of Burlington; one brother, Theodore Fredrick Blaul, who has just recently returned from service in France. At the present time, Emma Louise Blaul is at Watersmeet, Michigan and word has been sent to her.
