Albert Ludwig Biklen, 71, chairman of the Des Moines County board of supervisors and long a well-known Burlington businessman, died at 12:20 am Friday in Burlington hospital.
He had been in ill health for several months and suffered a stroke in his apartment in Hotel Burlington last Tuesday morning. He was unconscious when taken to the hospital and failed to rally.
He was born here May 25, 1875, the son of Mr. and Mrs. GH Biklen, and married Fay Evelyn Donahue June 17, 1909. She died Nov. 10, 1942.
He entered the Biklen-Winzer wholesale grocery company in 1895 and continued with that firm until it went out of business in 1942. For many years he was secretary and treasurer of the company.
Biklen was well known in the local, district, and state fair circles was secretary-treasurer of the Tri-State Fair corporation and one of the stockholders who proposed that the association property be turned over to Des Moines County. The transfer was approved by the voters at the last general election.
He was named to the board of supervisors in the general election of 1944, took office on Jan. 1, 1945, and was re-elected in 1946. He was chairman of the board for the 1946-47 terms.
Biklen was affiliated with the First Congregational Church, a member of the Elks, Golf club, Flint Hills club, and Crystal Lake club. When in business he was identified with the old Commercial Exchange, later the Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are a brother, Oscar, of Burlington; 4 sisters, Clara, Martha, and Mrs. Alma Wire of Burlington, and Mrs. Marie Pendleton of Lawerence, Dans.; 7 nieces and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday at the Burnett-Wallen Funeral home. Rev. Bruce Masselink will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
