George Bied Jr., 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Bied, 1103 South Street, was killed in a plane crash at San Jose, Costa Rica, his parents were advised Saturday by Pan-American Airways from Brownsville, Tex.
Details of the accident were not learned, but it was reported he was flying with friends whom he was visiting. The ship is thought to have been a private licensed one. The plane burned after crashing.
Bied has been stationed with Pan-American at Balboa, Canal zone for the past year where he worked as a plane checker – checking the ships in and out of port.
Born in Burlington on May 25, 1920, he attended public grade schools and graduated from Burlington High School. He studied airplane building at home, went to California where he completed his studies, then became identified with Pan-American. He left California two days after Pearl Harbor, spent a couple of months in Texas, and then was stationed at Balboa. A year ago he was home for a couple of weeks.
Recently he was given a two-week vacation and was spending it with friends in San Jose. He had written his parents that he had been up in a private plane several times. Surviving are his parents; a sister, Mrs. William Deilke of Washington, DC, and a brother, Andy, at home.
The Funeral will be held at Prugh’s Chapelon Sunday at 3:30 pm. Rev. WB Slater will officiate.
