Obituary
Three members of the Bethke family, Mr. and Mrs. Junie Bethke and 3-year old daughter, Margaret, were recovering today from carbon monoxide poisoning which caused them to be hurried to a hospital for treatment after being found in a precarious condition in their home. Mr. Bethke’s father, Dr. August H. Bethke, 69, a cancer specialist, who had been suffering with heart trouble, died shortly after a physician arrived in the home. Coroner Ray A Haupert today said he and attending physicians have agreed the death of Dr. Bethke was due to carbon monoxide poisoning from gas from a small gas heater. Other members of the family will recover.
Burial services for Dr. AH Bethke, former resident of Burlington who died Sunday in Marshalltown, Ia., were conducted here yesterday with the Rev. Mr. Zummach officiating. Burial was in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Dr. Bethke, a cancer specialist, died suddenly on Sunday after eating his dinner and three members of his family were seriously ill. They were taken to a hospital and an announcement is made that they will recover. An investigation was started by the coroner to determine if the food contained poison or if carbon monoxide from a gas barrier might have been responsible.
Dr. Bethke was formerly located in Burlington, years ago having an office on the west side of Osbourn Street at the end of Ash street. The building is no longer standing.
