Obituary
George A. Bessy, a veteran of the civil war and a veteran in the train service of the Burlington route, passed away Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock at his home, No. 610 Iowa Street, succumbing to an illness that lasted barely a week. He has hundreds of friends, not only in this city but along the road he served so faithfully for years between Burlington and Council Bluffs, who will be genuinely grieved to hear of the death of this courteous gentleman. He was a man who readily made friends and kept them. He was kind and considerate in his duties, ever-smiling and polite, the soul of graciousness and good breeding. As a husband and father, he was ideal in all respects and will be sadly missed from the little family circle.
Mr. Bessy was born in Fairhaven, Mass., September 1, 1847, from sturdy New England stock. As a young man he served his time on the sea, and at the outbreak of the civil war enlisted as a private in the Third Massachusetts infantry, of which regiment the late PM Crapo was also a member. He served his time and was honorably discharged, and in 1870 was united in marriage with Miss Sylvia Shiverick, of Pawtucket, RI. Mr. and Mrs. Bessy came to Burlington in the year 1872, and Mr. Bessy entered the employ of the old B&M railroad and has been a loyal servant ever since that time. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Alice B Cahill, and one brother, Benjamin Bessy, of New Bedford, Mass. He also leaves one grandson, Cato Cahill. He was a member of the Burlington Relief association, Lincoln lodge, AOUW, and the Blackhawk camp, WOW.
The funeral, to which friends are invited, will be held from No. 620 Iowa Street Wednesday afternoon at 2:30.
