John Walter Bertlshofer, 1801 Madison Ave, 57-year-old retired butcher and grocer, died of a heart attack at 7:30 am Tuesday in his garage while working on fishing equipment.
Death occurred as Howard Adams, 2018 Gnahn Street, a fishing companion, stopped by briefly on his way to work. Bertlshofer was dead when a physician arrived. Police ambulance and Coroner RO Giles also were called. The coroner listed the heart attack as the cause of death.
The veteran butcher had operated a butcher shop at 831 Harrison Avenue for many years until closing it in 1951. His father had run the shop before him. At one time it was equipped with a slaughterhouse.
Bertlshofer, a Democrat, had been an unsuccessful candidate for both county and city offices in recent years. He was in the race for superintendent of parks in 1948 and 1950. In 1950, he tried for a 1952 term on the board of supervisors.
Bertlshofer, an ardent fisherman, was a director of the Izaak Walton League and was a member of the Moose Lodge, Eagles, and Hawkeye natives.
He was born July 11, 1894, in Burlington the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bertlshofer, and was married to the former Sadie Rumbold July 11, 1941, at Kahoka, Mo.
Surviving are his widow; a son, John Paul of Memphis, Tenn.; his mother, Mrs. Lena Bertlshofer, Burlington; 2 sisters, Mrs. Charles Niewoehner and Mrs. Charles Bell, both of Burlington; 2 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. His father and 2 brothers are dead.
The body is at Giles funeral home. Funeral services for Mr. Bertlshofer of 1801 Madison Ave. will be held at the Giles funeral home Thursday, May 8, 1952, at 2 pm. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Rev. ME Lehmann officiating.
