John L. Bershee, 93, Civil war veteran and one of the few remaining veterans who accompanied General Sherman on the famous “march to the sea,” died at Mercy hospital at 7:30 Friday might.
Mr. Bershee, resident of Burlington for 70 years, died of complications resulting from his advanced years, relatives said. He made his home with a niece, Mrs. Louis Strack, 1426 Madison Avenue.
He was born in Williamsburg, Long Island, on Jan 2, 1842, and early in life was a printer on New York newspapers. On April 6, 1861, he enlisted in Company H, 4th regular infantry, and was mustered out in May 1865. He re-enlisted Aug. 7, 1863, remaining in the service until July 15, 1865. On his final release from the Army, he was a corporal in Company H, 17th regulars, New York.
Soon after the war, Mr. Bershee came to Burlington, to make his home with his brother, Charles. He has lived here ever since. In his first years here he was employed at the Winter planing mill, later being employed at the Nairn-Gillies company. Mr. Bershee was liked by all who knew him and he had made many friends. In later years, he enjoyed reading, but two years ago lost his vision because of cataracts. He was unmarried.
Besides Mrs. Strack, Mr. Bershee is survived by the following nieces and nephews; Emma, Sadie, Charles, George, and Olivier Bershee.
The funeral will be held at the Burnett-Wallen funeral home at 4 pm Monday, with burial in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Dr. RB Blyth, pastor of First Congregational church, will officiate.
