Obituary
John Bernard, well known retired Burlington businessman, died this morning at Marion, Indiana, where he has been visiting his daughter, Mrs. Olive Trook, for several months. Death was reported due to a heart ailment with which Mr. Bernard had been troubled for more than a year. He has been spending most of his time in recent weeks at Marion, Where Mrs. Trook was seriously injured some time ago in an automobile accident.
Mr. Bernard, who was about 78 years old, was a native and lifelong resident of Burlington. For many years he was connected with the lumber firm of Bernard Brothers and Mercer, later the Bernard and Ellis Co., and now the Ellis Lumber Company. He retired years ago. He was married to Miss Mary Crites, who preceded him in death in 1919.
Mr. Bernard was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and served as treasurer of Washington lodge No. 1 of this city for forty years, retiring from that office several months ago. He was also a member of the Elks and Kiwanis club. For a time he served as treasurer of the Burlington Community Chest.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Mrs. Trook, or Marion, Indiana, and Mrs. Dorothy Schaff of Des Moines and one son, Frank Bernard, of Los Angeles, California, two sisters, Mrs. John Mercer of Burlington, and Mrs. Charles Smith of Haverhill, Mass.; three grandchildren, John Bernard of Chicago, Edwin Trook, Jr., of Marion, Ind., and Mary Anna Schaaf of Des Moines. One daughter died in childhood.
The body will be brought here and taken to Prugh’s chapel pending funeral services which it is understood, will be either Monday or Tuesday of next week in charge of Dr. Archibald Cardle, pastor of First Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services for John Bernard will be held at 2 pm Monday at Prugh’s chapel. Burial will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery.
